Challenges of Cyber Security in Pakistan. When it comes to cybersecurity, the United States and other Western countries.
In this article, we will discuss the challenges of cybersecurity in Pakistan, trying to identify them within a broader international context. While developed countries like the United States and other Western countries have established strong strategies and frameworks to fight cyber threats, Pakistan still faces significant obstacles in building an effective national cybersecurity framework and lacks strong resistance against attacks.
Especially the European Union is quick to respond to threats, but they are slow to do the same for cyber-attacks.
Many of these attacks are carried out by criminal actors, who are determined to profit from the growing cyber threat. Pakistan is not immune to cyber threats.

The country has been the victim of several high-profile cyberattacks, including those carried out by international hackers and criminals.
Pakistan has never fully recovered from these incidents.
We review recent cyberattacks targeting Pakistan and analyze their consequences for the country’s cybersecurity. We first outline the nature and scale of these attacks, then examine the primary techniques and actors involved, and assess their impact on public and private organizations. Finally, we address the main challenges Pakistan faces in strengthening its cyber security infrastructure and propose areas for future policy development.
What is the threat? (Cyber Security)
The threat of cybercrime in Asia has grown significantly since 2008, and this trend has had substantial implications for Pakistan. According to a report by the Computer Crime and Forensics Research Group (CCFRG) in 2013, around $5 billion (approximately $8.9 billion in constant 2015 US dollars) was spent on cybercrime activities across Asia. While Asian countries as a whole lost $30 billion to cybercrime in 2008, Pakistan has also experienced major economic losses and security breaches resulting from cyber threats, reflecting the broader regional escalation in cybercrime.
The report shows that cybercrime is not limited to high-end crimes such as:
Cybercrimes against governments, banks, critical infrastructure, or health organizations. Petty criminals also use cybercrime in the guise of cheating, fraud, blackmail, and extortion.
Cyber Criminals are mostly freelance. They are extremely well organized, and they can afford to hire professionals to manage the networks they target.
They rarely operate alone, and their networks are often spread out over many countries. According to the CCFRG report:
The cybercrime network in Asia is extremely large, spanning 156 countries.
What are the Cyber Challenges facing Pakistan?
Recent cyber-attacks in Pakistan have employed a diverse collection of techniques and technologies, reflecting the adaptability of cyber criminals. By continuously varying their methods, these actors can evade detection and exploit vulnerabilities in existing security systems.
In Pakistan, cyber-attacks are usually launched by organizations, such as local institutions or commercial organizations.
Cyber Criminals launch their attacks from remote locations using sophisticated technical knowledge and network access, and these attacks are not detected until long after they are carried out.

Cyber Criminals use technical tools to gain access to a target’s network:
Many organizations take the risk to expand their services, get new clients, or upgrade their networks, and cyber criminals can operate from these organizations.
These organizations may have no cybersecurity team or plan to respond to cyberattacks. Without this due diligence strategy!!!
It is effortless for cyber criminals to target the entire organization, rather than just one particular service or system.
Cyber Criminals also use cyber tools, such as malware or hacking tools:
Cyber Criminals also use cyber tools, such as malware or hacking tools, to try to gain access to a target’s network.
These tools can be relatively simple, like a USB pen drive, or sophisticated, such as complex tools for cyber attacks against the systems of private and public organizations.
Cyber Criminals also launch cyberattacks by spreading spam on social networks. Cyber Security:
Cyber Criminals also target organizations through the use of social media or other online activities. They spread their propaganda to gather information and insights that they can later use for their criminal actions.
Cyber Criminals also use techniques such as spam:
Emails or sending mass emails to thousands of organizations. Organizations are often unaware of these threats until they see the impact of these cyber-attacks.
For example, cyber criminals may carry out a cyber-attack and then claim responsibility through social media and the media.
Another method is to set up malicious websites and domains. In recent years, such websites have sprung up to target businesses in the guise of another entity or organization, such as a non-profit organization, a religious organization, or a government agency.
While the impact of the attack may not have been as devastating as a cyber-attack by a government or military, it can still be harmful.
The website is sometimes designed in such a way that when people access it, they are unknowingly redirected to a malicious website that tries to access information and infect them with malware.
Cyber-attacks are currently being carried out using the following methods:
These include cyber-attacks using tools and techniques, such as sending spam emails and spreading malicious websites.
The impact of cyber-attacks is significant for businesses, but individuals are also at risk, as cyber threats often target personal data and can lead to substantial personal and financial harm.
This is because the methods and tools are very technical, and the impact is not dramatic enough to be a threat to individuals.
However, cyber-attacks are the single biggest threat to businesses, and all organizations need to look for these and respond.
Cybersecurity researchers, cybersecurity experts, and cybersecurity professionals in the field must collaborate to counter these threats.
Cybersecurity experts must share their expertise and work together with organizations in the field to help them improve their security measures.
Hi there! This article could not be written any better!
Reading through this article reminds me of my previous roommate!
He continually kept talking about this. I am going to send
this information to him. Fairly certain he’ll have a very good
read. Thanks for sharing!
Hi! Thank you so much for the kind words! I’m glad the article resonated with you and reminded you of your roommate. It’s great that you’re going to share it with him—hopefully, he enjoys it just as much! If you or he have any thoughts or questions about the content, feel free to reach out. Thanks again for reading!
Hey would you mind stating which blog platform you’re using?
I’m looking to start my own blog soon but I’m having a difficult time deciding between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal.
The reason I ask is because your design and style seems different then most blogs and I’m
looking for something completely unique. P.S Apologies for getting off-topic but
I had to ask!
Hey! No problem at all—I’m glad you asked! I’m actually using WordPress for my blog. It offers a lot of flexibility and has a huge variety of themes and plugins that can help you create a unique design.
If you’re looking for something completely different, you might want to explore WordPress’s customization options or consider using a page builder plugin like Elementor or Beaver Builder. They allow for more creative freedom in design.
BlogEngine and B2evolution are also great options, especially if you prefer a simpler setup, while Drupal is powerful for more complex sites but has a steeper learning curve.
If you have any specific features in mind or need help deciding, feel free to share! Good luck with your blogging journey!
